BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is an initiative designed to enhance learning and digital skills by integrating technology into the classroom. Our BYOD program aims to create a technologically enriched learning environment, preparing students for future academic and professional challenges while fostering a love for learning and innovation.
In 2025, our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) iPad program was revised.
As part of this program, our Grade 3-6 families are strongly encouraged to equip their child with an iPad which should be brought to school, fully charged every day.
The adaption to our BYOD program from 2025 and beyond is that Grades F-2 will have class sets of iPads supplied therefore students/families will no longer be required to purchase their own device.
For Grades 3-6, 1:1 iPad use offers numerous benefits. It facilitates personalised learning, allowing students to work at their own pace and access tailored resources. iPads provide instant access to educational apps and online resources, making learning engaging and interactive. They also enhance digital literacy, creativity, and cater to various learning styles, preparing students for a tech-driven future.
At Ceres, we will use Jamf Apple Device Management to load and update educational apps seamlessly. This ensures that all devices have the necessary tools for learning and are kept up-to-date with the latest software.
To ensure iPads are well-maintained, we strongly encourage each iPad to have a sturdy protective case, students handle devices carefully entering and exiting school with devices securely in their school bags, and keep them clean.
Regular software updates and app management are crucial, as is teaching digital responsibility for safe internet use and password security.
If parents are looking to purchase a new iPad, please be advised our school has established a connection with JB Hi-Fi who can provide advice, guidance, and support to ensure you select and purchase the most appropriate device, accessories, and insurance if required.

Changes to Digital Device Use
From 2027, the Victorian Government is introducing changes to the use of digital devices for students from Prep to Grade 6.
Under the new guidelines, schools:
These changes are intended to support families by reducing cost-of-living pressures. They will also support students by reducing screen-time which can reduce the risk of eye strain, sedentary behaviour, and reduced peer interaction. These reforms complement Victoria’s nation-leading mobile phone restrictions, ensuring an integrated approach to addressing digital distraction and the inappropriate use of technology.
What this means for our school?
This means we will be ceasing our current BYOD program for Grades 3-6 from 2027 on. Instead, we will provide class sets of digital devices for use by students. Students who have been using BYO devices prior to 2027 will be able to continue to bring their devices to school, but we will be following the new recommended device use times.
Students with disability who use a digital device as a reasonable adjustment are exempt from these changes.
These changes are intended to support families with cost-of-living pressures and reduce student screen time.
